Thank Goodness it's NOT Friday!

I read in the papers a few days ago, a Feng Shui master predicted that 2005, the year of the rooster was going to be an inauspicious year. She then advised us to observe what happens to us this Friday. Quoting her, “This is the beginning of the season of spring of the first lunar month, and will determine the luck of an individual for the rest of the year. If good things happen to you on this day, then you will enjoy a great year. Otherwise, the year may be full of obstacles.”

Narrrling picked me up from work last night. Very sweet of him to drive 45 minutes into the land of nowhere, Cyberjaya to save me from the agony of having to take the bus home, a 1 whole hour of rocky rides listening to cranky Malay radio stations, hearing local artists rap, shout, scream, belch, yell, screech their version of this thing they call singing. Sometimes I wonder why I am the only one who notices the loud cracks and hisses. Doesn’t anyone know that the cracks and hisses can be fixed with a magical knob turning/tapping exercise called ‘tuning’? By hook or by crook, I will make sure i drive myself to work this Friday because I sure don’t want to be doomed with bad radio hissing for the rest of the year.

On the way home with Narrrling, we started talking about the Feng Shui prediction and although I’ve never practiced any kind of Feng Shui and Narrrling is a 6' 3", blue eyed blondie who probably thinks Feng Shui is equivalent to Thai black magic, we both couldn’t help but wonder if our faith for the rest of the year was going to be foretold to us this Friday.

Last night, Narrrling tried to install Windows XP onto my brother’s pc that was already on Windows 2000. Narrrling considered it his missionary obligations as my brother’s pc has long been infested by spy-wares, Trojans, sex-dialers and the list goes on... Narrrling as the IT expert (at least in my house) couldn’t bear to stand on the side and witness it anymore and therefore, launched himself into this new project of saving gf’s brother’s computer. As the sweet and supportive gf, I sat on the side and tried not to fall asleep.

It all started well. The installation CD joyfully pops up a nice XP-ed screen stating that this might take a while. So meanwhile, Narrrling and I sat by the side and played some card games to kill time. And since Chinese New Year was coming, we decided to put some small bets on our card games. When I started gathering a loot of a whopping RM15, the computer made a cute little ping sound. Installation completed! Narrrling gleefully skips over to my brother’s pc to restart pc. We both stared into the screen waiting for the gorgeous XP blue screen to appear. Yup, a blue screen appeared but not the kind we anticipated. My brother’s poor pc then launched into a possessed hysteria, re-starting over and over and over again, each time ending with a blue screen. Oh No! I panicked, but Narrrling looked calm. “It’s ok, I’ll just return it to its original Windows 2000 settings” He said that with confidence.

Trying my best to look assured, I gave him my quiet support by keeping my mouth shut and sat down on my brother’s bed. I guess screaming at him or the computer won’t help. So Narrrling started his fight, trying all tricks possible to revive the computer. After about 30 minutes of trying, I was awakened by a loud sigh.. I woke up and realized where I was. Narrrling was looking at me and he said, “Oh No, I screwed up your brother’s pc.” It took me a while to remember what he was talking about and when it registered, I tried my best not to scream nor make a fuss. Then Narrrling stood up, walked over to the bed and said, “Thank God your brother is an easy going fella” and plunged himself onto the bed next to me.

The moment he sat down, I heard the loudest CRACK that sounded like a gunshot in a distance. My heart sank. Then I realized, no, my ENTIRE body sank. We broke my brother’s bed! In a split second, we both jumped out of bed to see what we’ve done. Half of his bed was on the ground. Then we REALLY panicked. We came to his room, killed his computer and broke his bed. All that matters to him in his bedroom.

After that, the both of us broke into a wild goose frantic run around the house. We thought we could nail the bed back into one piece. While i ran to fetch the hammer and nails, Narrrling continued to trouble-shoot on the pc. I hammered half of one nail into the hard wood and when i couldn't manage anymore, Narrrling came over and took over the hammer. When he too couldn't hammer the nail in anymore (must be some kind of metal in the wood somewhere), we both sat there and stared at each other. Now we have a broken pc, a broken bed and half a nail sticking out of my elder brother's bed and he's about to come home anytime now.. We then broke into a hysterical laugh.

Half an hour later, we somehow managed to hammer a couple of other nails onto my brother's bed to keep it in one piece. They all went in halfway but we smartly bent the other half of the nail 90 degrees downwards so that it doesn't protrude. We don't hope that my brother won't notice, but at least discover it after we fixed his pc. As for his pc, Narrrling still couldn't get it up. This one, we covered up with later telling my brother, "Narrrling is trying to install Windows XP for you. He's now only midway. Probably by tomorrow you can use your pc".

That night, Narrrling stayed over at my place. Snuggled up in bed comfortably, we told each other, "Thank Goodness it's NOT Friday!" because then it would mean, the rest of the year can't be good for us, and probably even worse for my brother.
